Alyssa Burley: Hi! This is Alyssa Burley with Rancho Mesa’s Media Communications and Client Services Department. Thank you for listening to today’s top Rancho Mesa news brought to you by our safety and risk management network, StudioOne™. Welcome back, everyone. My guest is Lauren Stumpf, Media Communications and Client Services Specialist with Rancho Mesa. Today, we're going to talk about the San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (also known as NAWIC) and their fund raising efforts, specifically the annual golf tournament. Lauren, welcome to the show.

Lauren Stumpf: Hi Alyssa, thanks for having me!

AB: Of course. So, for years, the NAWIC San Diego Chapter has raised funds for local charities through an annual golf tournament. And after the passing of a beloved NAWIC member, the chapter board voted to rename the tournament to the Paula Covert Memorial Golf Tournament, in her honor. And Paula was an active NAWIC member and the founder of the golf tournament so it seems fitting that it was named after her. So Lauren, when and where will the first Paula Covert Memorial Golf Tournament be held this year?

LS: The golf tournament will be held on Friday, July 21st, 2023 at the Riverwalk Golf Club in San Diego’s Mission Valley. Not too far from Rancho Mesa’s new office.

AB: So, this golf tournament is a fundraiser. And there are many local companies who are sponsoring this event. Where will the proceeds be donated?

LS: Well, NAWIC San Diego is proud to donate all proceeds from the golf tournament to Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego and the Future Construction Leaders Foundation of San Diego. To give our listeners some perspective, over that last thirteen years, this event has raised over $100,000 that has gone back into the local community.

AB: Wow, that’s really impressive. So, tell our listeners a little about both of these organizations that will benefit from this event.

LS: Sure, Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego is a non-profit pediatric-care facility dedicated to excellence in care, research and teaching. And, the Future Construction Leaders Foundation of San Diego is dedicated to the advancement of programs focused on educating youth about career opportunities in the construction industry and encouraging them to pursue careers in this field.

AB: Yeah, both of these organizations are focused on the well-being of local children. And, I know that Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego does really important life-saving work in collaboration with world-renowned institutions like UC San Diego and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. So, we’re really happy that we can give back to an organization that is doing such vital work right here in San Diego. And the Future Construction Leaders Foundation of San Diego offers programs like Camp NAWIC which is a unique week-long, hands-on day camp where high school girls learn the basic elements of various construction trades and develop a “can-do” attitude. It’s a really cool program. And, they also offer programs like Block Kids that challenges students from kindergarten to 6th grade to use their imagination in constructing a structure or project using interlocking blocks. And, they also offer scholarships to those who want to pursue a degree or a trade in construction or whose parent is in the construction industry. Both of these organizations are doing work that benefits our community. So Lauren, you and I will be at the Paula Covert Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, July 21st, 2023. If attendees want to stop by and say hi, how can they find us at the event?

LS: Yeah so, we’ll be out on the course at one of the holes. So, look for our blue Rancho Mesa sign. We’ll have drinks, snacks and a game of corn hole to play while you wait your turn – we know there can sometimes be a wait when playing in these types of tournaments.

AB: So Lauren, if listeners are interested in NAWIC, where can they get more information?

LS: Yeah, if listeners are in the San Diego area, they can visit NAWICSD.org; otherwise, visit NAWIC.org to find a local chapter.

AB: Lauren, I can’t wait for the tournament. It should be a lot of fun and it’s for a great cause. So, thanks for joining me in StudioOne™.
